The History of Grottammare

One of the main seaside resorts of Marche, embedded in the wonderful area called Palm Coast Riviera delle Palme), is Grottammare.


Grottammare has to be mentioned as one of the best choices for those who are looking for beach, sun, but also for a lively and glamour nightlife.

Anyway, our goal is to underline the high value and importance of Grottammare, besides all the events that its great position and its perfect organization may offer during the summer season.

Grottammare, in fact, is a treasure for Marche and for the entire Palm Coast and can offer history, arts and culture to discover in any period of the year!

Now, Turismo Marche is pleased to introduce you to a brief history of the town of Grottammare.

Grottammare get its name from the words “Grotte a mare”, due to the presence of natural caves on the Eastern side of the hill where is located the ancient borough, once washed by the sea.

The first documents talking about Grottammare are dated X-XI century A.C., but the oldest testimonies about human settlements in this area are referred to the ancient population of Piceni dated between IX and IV century B.C.

The growth of Grottammare as seaside resort begin in ‘600, when is already a famous spot for its beach and is frequented by noble families.

In ‘700, began the developping of the new town’s centre alongside the coast, due to the improved social and economic conditions but also allowed by the continuous reducing of the sea.

In ‘800 Grottammare is a spot suggested by doctors, who indicate this town as the ideal place where staying after respiratory diseases and after skin illness.

In this period Grottammare was chosen to spend their holidays by famous men just like Girolamo Bonaparte, the young brother of Napoleone and by the famous musician Franz Listz who declare in the summer of 1868:“The weeks spent in Grottammare will remain forever the best and sweetest memories of my life”.

In the beginning of ‘900 starts, alongside the coast, the building of nice little houses in Liberty style, still nowadays one of the most interesting features of the artistic architecture of Grottammare.


In the following years Grottammare improved its beauty with the gorgeous promenade along the coast full of palm trees and oleander, with wide pine trees forest just in front of the beaches and, in the thirties, with the first facilities for sports and fun, just like Kursaal, the famous disco which made hot and glamour the nights of the sixties, now transformed in an interesting museum.
